Atlas Eclipticalis

In 1958 the Czech astronomer Antonín Becvár published a collection of star charts. They inspired John Cage to compose Atlas Eclipticalis. He took the book literaly as point of departure: he placed staves on top of the charts and drew larger and smaller dots on them, depending on the luminosity of the represented stars. The result is a multitude of subtly buzzing speckles in a sonorous firmament.

Cage’s Cartridge Music forms the guideline, based on random procedures that determine whether or not sounds are recorded, manipulated and spatialised in a vibrating universe.

Whether they will ever return remains uncertain.
