Twee eeuwen geleden vatte Wilhelm Müller deze universele queeste poëtisch in een bewust naïeve stijl met volkse eenvoud. Hij streefde naar de uitdrukking van een vurig en onbewust verlangen naar het meest verhevene. Het brandende resultaat smeult tot op vandaag in Schuberts onsterfelijke melodieën uit Die Schöne Müllerin, waarin een kabbelend beekje de spraakloze medereiziger is van de noodlottige.
