Gérard Grisey is een van de pioniers van het spectralisme, een muzikale stroming waarbij het meticuleuze componeren van klankkleuren centraal staat. Zelf verwees hij naar zijn werk als 'musique liminale': muziek op de grens, daar waar drempels worden overschreden, waar langzame transformaties en onmerkbare overgangen plaatsvinden. Wanneer precies wordt de dag nacht ?
In Quatre chants pour franchir le seuil, the last piece he wrote before his unexpected passing, the central theme is the crossing of the boundary between life and death. The four songs stem from as many different cultures: Christianity, Ancient Egypt, Greece and Mesopotamia.
