For Atlas Eclipticalis liet John Cage zich inspireren door de in 1958 gepubliceerde verzameling sterrenkaarten van de Tsjechische astronoom Antonín Becvár. Hij nam dit boek letterlijk als uitgangspunt: bovenop de kaarten plaatste hij notenbalken waarop hij - afhankelijk van de helderheid van het licht - grotere of kleinere punten tekende. Het resultaat klinkt als een veelheid van subtiel gonzende klankstippen in een klinkend uitspansel.
